It is believed that Salir Castle was built during the late12th/early13th centuries to defend the Moorish field workers from Christian attack. Its ramparts are built of "taipa" and the fortress is one of few surviving examples of Moorish this type of fortification in Portugal. It was captured by the Knights of the Order of Sant’Iago after the fall of Tavira and it was here that Paio Peres Correia, awaited the arrival of King Afonso III before going on to seize Faro. Archaeological excavations have confirmed that part of Salir is built on the site of the old fortification.
