Commemorating the Battle of Salado River, near Tarifa, on October 30th 1340, the Salado Monument (Padrão do Salado) is a Gothic shrine. This battle was of great significance in Portugal’s history as it ended the last major Muslim invasion. It was a joint victory by King Afonso IV of Portugal and King Alfonso XI of Castile, after which the Marinids returned to Morocco. The stone cross was donated in 1342 by a local businessman, Pero Esteves, and is linked to a legend related to the naming of this square as Praça da Oliveira.
