Santa Catarina Park is located between Avenida do Infante and Avenida Sá Carneiro and has a magnificent view of Funchal from the bay to Ponta do Garajau. The park covers an area of approximately 9 acres and has large lawns surrounded by plants from around the world. Other features are aviaries, a lake and bird island, fountains and the Santa Catarina Chapel. The statue to Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), who discovered America, is close to the chapel; he married Filipa de Moniz, the daughter of the first governor of Porto Santo and lived on the nearby island.
