St Catherine’s Church is another example of the Portuguese version of Baroque style, with a harmonious blend of rich decoration and simplicity. It forms part of the Convento de São Paulo da Serra da Ossa and became the parish church of Santa Catarina after the banning of religious orders in 1834. The rococo-style decorated stucco ceilings are outstanding, as is the monumental organ of carved and gilded wood. Other notable features are the paintings by Bento Coelho da Silveira, the 17th century upper choir stalls and the marble altarpiece of Senhor Jesus da Pobreza (Our Lord of Poverty).
