The Convent of Santo António dos Capuchos dates to the beginning of the 17th century. It has a simple façade, but makes up for this with a spectacular interior. Both the main and lateral altars are embellished with 18th century gold leaf carvings. The 18th century tiles depict scenes from the life of Saint Anthony. Religious orders were banned in 1834 and the building became the National Republican Guard Barracks. Later the Infante D. Henrique Archaeological Museum was housed there until the collection moved to the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção. The chapel then reverted to its religious role.
