Opposite the bishops’ palace, the Convento da Graça is now divided into an old people’s home and the Museum of Sacred Art called locally the Museu de Arte Sacra da Misericórdia. The convent belonged to Franciscan monks until 1526. The Misericórdia order, although founded in 1514, was only transferred here in 1836. The present buildings date from the 18th century. The museum includes a varied collection of religious art, the highlight of the collection being the 16th and 18th century ivory Christs. On the road back into town you will pass the 15th century cross known as the Cruzeiro de São João.
