Opened to the public in 1955, the Sacred Art Museum is housed in the 17th century former bishops’ palace. The wealthy merchants of Madeira commissioned items of great value for their local churches and the museum displays many of these, including paintings, statues, vestments, jewellery, and illuminated hymn books. They are testimony to the enormous wealth the sugar industry developed. The items are mainly from the 15th to 17th centuries and it is the paintings that attract most attention, in particular those on oak. Another spectacular item is the Gothic gold plated processional cross donated by King Manuel I.
