Beside the River Cõa, the attractive town of Sabugal has an interesting history and is worth visiting. Located about 46 km from the border with Spain, to whom it once belonged, the town became Portuguese following the Treaty of Alcañices in 1297. Apart from the castle (see separate entry), you can see the nearby town pillory and in the Praça da República, the granite clock tower rebuilt in the 17th century. The Jardim de Cõa can be visited, as can the Sabugal dam, 2.5 km south of the town at the confluence of the Cõa and Douro Rivers.
