Situated about 21 km southwest of Vila Real, in the Port wine demarcated area, Sobrosa was settled in Neolithic times. Its attractions include a wealth of archaeological features; dolmens and cromlechs from the Neolithic period, Iron Age hill-top forts, such as Castro da Sancha and mediaeval Palaeo-Christian tombs. The village of Provesende, about 8 km south, dates back to the period before Portugal became a kingdom. Sabrosa was also the home of Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan), the 15th century Portuguese navigator and first man to circumnavigate the globe. It has many fine manor houses, such as the Casa dos Canavarros de Barros.
