The Cathedral was constructed when Silves was the capital of the Algarve and retained Episcopal status until the 16th century. Entrance to the church is via a lateral Rococo-style porch known as the Sun Gate. Built out of red sandstone, it was begun late in the 13th century. The interior has three naves and the beauty of the transept and apse are outstanding. On the main altar is a statue in jasper of the Our Lady with the Infant Jesus. On the floor are headstones; one of which denotes the former resting place of King João II (1455-1495).
