In 1556, Juliãoo de Alva, chaplain to Catarina, wife to king Joãpo III ordered the building of Portalegre Cathedral, which was later modified between 1737 and 1798. Inside, there are 17th century tile panels and Mannerist paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries. In the main chapel are the works of the sculptor and engraver Gaspar Coelho and painters Francisco Venegas, Fernão Gomes and Simão Rodrigues. The sacristy houses 18th century tiles depicting the Flight to Egypt. To the north is the Episcopal Palace, which has an internal link to the Cathedral. The palace was the Bishop’s residence until 1910.
