The Sé Catedral de Beja dates from 1590 and was built on the instruction of Archbishop Teotónio de Bragança, to a design by Jorge Rodrigues. The interior is highly decorated with a retable in the main chapel covered in gold-leafed carving by Lisbon master, Manuel João da Fonseca, dated 1696-97. The altarpieces in the lateral chapels and an altar painting of St Joseph are attributed to André Reinoso. In the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Conception, the set of 18th century blue and white tiles (azuelos) displaying religious images is outstanding.
