Located in the Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro, also known as the Praça Velasquez, the Sá Carneiro Memorial monument is a 1990 work by the sculptor Gustavo Bastos, who was born in Figueira da Voz in 1928. The subject, Francisco Sá Carneiro (1934-1980), was a leading liberal Portuguese political leader. He founded the Social Democratic party in 1974, the year of the Carnation Revolution, which led to a return to democracy in Portugal and became Prime Minister in 1980, but died in a plane crash the same year. The monument consists of two blocks, one granite covered the other of granite and bronze.
