In order to encourage renewal of the historic town centre, the council restored a dilapidated small three storey house, typical of Guimarães, in the Rua Egas Moniz, also known as Rua Nova. The house, thought to be medieval in origin, was rebuilt in the 17th century and the interior partially modified in the 19th century. The prize-winning restoration was carried out by local craftsmen, using traditional techniques and local materials, and the only alterations made were a new rear elevation, in keeping with the character of the building, and the introduction of public toilets.
