The Rua Dom Joćo I is lined with antique houses with wooden balconies and, being the way out to Porto, was at one time one of the busiest streets in Guimarćes. It contains a number of interesting attractions, including the 16th century memorial to King Joćo I (1385-1433), with its splendid stone cross and canopy in renaissance style. The small chapel of Senhora da Ajuda has the date of 1600 carved into its stonework. There is also the 19th century building of the Tertiary Order of St. Dominic, the religious order which opened a hospital here in 1854.
