Faro is packed with shops selling quality goods and beautifully made handicrafts. Strolling down the pedestrian streets, paved with stunning geometric motives, is a delightful way to spend a day. Rua de Santo António is one of the best-known of these shopping thoroughfares, but its history predates the shops. From the thirteenth century it was the main link between the tanneries and the sea, but it only derived its name in the fifteenth century, when a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony was built next to a watchtower. There are many terraces, cafes and restaurants to rest and soak up the atmosphere.
