As it linked the castle with the monastery founded by Countess Mumadona in the lower part of town, the Rua de Santa Maria was one of the first streets in Guimarães. It is referred to in documents from the 12th century onwards and is very typical of the historic centre of the town. Apart from the Santa Cara Convent there are a number of important buildings along the street including the Casa do Arco, the Casa dos Peixotos and the Casa dos Valadares.
