The Roxo Dam, known locally as the Albufeira (or Barragem) do Roxo, supplies the municipalities of Beja and Aljustrel. It was intended primarily for irrigation; however, an active water-based tourist industry has built up around the dam. Although motorised water sports, such as water skiing, are not allowed, a variety of activities take place both in and on the water. The dam offers facilities for rowing, sailing, wind surfing and fishing. The nearest town is Ervidel, which has restaurants and bars.
