The Praça de Dom Pedro IV is the official name of the lovely square known as the Praça do Rossio or just Rossio, which has long been the hub of Lisbon activity. Its history includes bullfights, rallies and the grisly execution of judgements of the Inquisition. The 28 metre high, 1870 statue of Dom Pedro IV holds centre stage, with two beautiful 1889 fountains set in the black and grey rolling motion paving. On the north side is the Teatro Nacional Donna Maria II, whilst on the west the Café de Nicola was a favourite meeting place for writers.
