In the Rossio stands the 28 metre high monument to King Pedro I of Brazil, also briefly King Pedro IV of Portugal, which was erected in 1870. The King on top of the column is holding in his right hand the constitution which established the independence of Brazil and Portugal. Four female figures around the base are allegories of Justice, Wisdom, Courage and Moderation, attributes ascribed to Pedro IV. Legend has it that the statue is actually that of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, in transit to Lisbon when he was assassinated. Due to the uncanny likeness the substitution was made.
