Built in 1887 in the most important square in Lisbon at the time, architect Jose Luis Monteiro designed the Rossio Station in a Neo-Manueline style, imitating early 16th century Portuguese architecture. Of particular interest are the two horseshoe-shaped portals, and the amount of sculptural decoration. The adjacent Hotel Avenida was designed by the same architect. Built at a time when it was common to copy past styles and when railway stations were viewed as monuments, this is one of the few remaining examples Neo-Manueline public building.
