The Rosalio de Castro Monument is located in an attractive setting in the Praça da Galiza. The work of the distinguished sculptor Barata Feyo (1899-1990), whose other works in Porto include the equestrian statue of King João VI and that of Almeida Garrett (see separate entries), it was inaugurated in September 1954. Rosalía Castro de Murguía (1837-1885), more commonly known as Rosalía de Castro, was a distinguished romantic Spanish poet and writer who was born in Santiago de Compostela. Her work is characterized by a combination of nostalgia, longing and melancholy.
