The Roman Villa of São Cucufate dates from the 1st century AD. It was altered in the the 2nd century and much of it was destroyed in the 4th century in order to be replaced by a convent. From the ruins it is still possible to imagine the house as a residence of roman lords. During the Middle Ages the building served the Military Order of Santiago and was abandoned during the 16th century. The central portion of the villa is framed by 2 symmetrical towers. The site is also known as the ruins of Santiago. There are facilities for disabled visitors and guided tours are offered.
