This first century BC theatre, built by Emperor Augustus, was subsequently enlarged before being abandoned in the middle Ages and later buried. It was only rediscovered in 1798 as a result of post earthquake reconstruction and the archaeological remains are behind a small, but attractive, museum. Containing a variety of finds including a statue of Silenus and an inscription dedicating the theatre to Nero, the museum, which is close to the cathedral, tells the history of Roman Lisbon by video and other means.
