Popularly known as the Temple of Diana, although there is no evidence that the Romans dedicated it to her, the temple remains have become Evora’s best known symbol. Whilst there is some doubt as to the date of construction, it is generally accepted to be from the 1st or 2nd century and is one of the best preserved Roman structures in Portugal. Fourteen Corinthian columns and part of the architrave remain and the 3 metre high base is almost completely preserved. Used at various times as a fortress and a slaughterhouse, it was restored in the 19th century.
