Located a few kilometres southwest of Beja, the ruins of Pisões, with their two-thousand-year-old mosaics, bring to life the Alentejo’s historic past. Pisões, with its typically Roman architecture arranged around a peristyle (central courtyard surrounded by columns), was once an important centre for supplying ’Pax Julia’, as Beja was called. The ’pars rustica’ and the ’pars fructuaria’ (workers’ quarters, granaries and storage) are still unexcavated. Discovered by chance in 1967, the mosaic floors in the most important of the forty rooms are themselves a sufficient reason for visiting Pisões. Close by is the Roman dam, which once supplied the heated baths and the Olympic-sized swimming pool.
