The Roman presence in Álamo is evident from a roman villa which was discovered here in the 19th century. The Romans were also responsible for the thick walls of the dam that used to block the progress of the Fornalha creek, the Barragem romana do Álamo. The dam stretched approximately 40 metres in length and had six buttresses. Álamo was also the site of early Visigoth and Moorish settlements, evidence of which has survived to present day.
