Although known as the Roman Bridge, only the foundations of the low, arched stone bridge spanning the Rio Gilão are Roman in origin. After a recent archaeological survey, the impressive seven arched bridge was found not to be Roman, but a 12th Century Moorish bridge. The Moorish occupation of Tavira left its mark on the architecture and culture of the area, turning Tavira into an important port for sailors and fishermen. Illuminated at night, the bridge is a favourite subject for artists, both local and visiting. Tavira is one of the most architecturally attractive towns in the Algarve.
