The attractive bridge over the River Lima, from which the town gets its name, was originally built by the Romans, probably around the 1st century. Only five of the original stone arches remain, and the 277 metre long restored and rebuilt medieval bridge seen today, is documented to have been started in 1368. The merlons and paving were carried out in 1504 on the orders of King Manuel I. There were once towers at the ends of the bridge, but these were demolished in the second half of the 19th century due to traffic congestion.
