Ribeirinha is hidden in a narrow valley. Parts of it are known as Calço da Chã da Cruz and Espalhafatos. In the latter one, which literally means dropping clothes, history says that it got its strange name from the end of the Spanish occupation of the island. It is said that the frightened Spanish ran away in such a hurry, that they dropped all their clothes as they left. The construction of the Ribeirinha lighthouse began in 1914. It was almost completely destroyed by the 1998 earthquake, as were most of the other buildings in the parish, including the Church of St. Mathew from the 17th century.
