A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the riverside quarter of Ribeira, with its narrow twisting streets and colourful houses, is an atmospheric place. It is particularly lively at night with many cafes, bars and restaurants and if you leave Porto without visiting Ribeira, you have missed its soul. Originally the centre of commerce in the city, when sailing ships unloaded at the Cais de Ribeira, it is a fascinating and photogenic place. The Praça da Ribeira is a centre of activity, whilst traditional boats float at the quayside with the backdrop of the River Douro and the Dom Luis Bridge (see separate entry).
