Situated 3.5 km north of Ericeira, at the mouth of the river that provides its name, Ribeira d’Ilhas Beach is regarded as one of the best in Europe for surfing and body boarding. Since 1985 this has been the venue each year for one of the world championship events. The steep slopes of the valley surround the beach and it has a well developed infrastructure including bars and restaurants. The beach has EEC blue flag status, lifeguards on duty in season and the average seawater temperature in summer is 17-18 ºC. Umbrellas can be hired and there is parking.
