Ribeira de Pena, located approximately 51 km north of Vila Real, is in the heart of the vinho verde wine region and crossed by a number of rivers, including the Tâmega with its excellent fishing conditions. The region has been inhabited since prehistoric times and there is a rich archaeological heritage including the Lamelas shrine and its Stone Age engravings. There are also pre-Roman hilltop fort settlements, such as Monte do Cabriz near Cerva village. Many fine manor houses can be admired and the Ponte de Cavês across the River Tâmega and the 18th century church of São Salvador also merit attention.
