The Fonte Pequena and Fonte Grande were once a meeting place for the women of Alte to collect water and do their washing. The waters of the little font and grand font, which are the source of the River Alte, once turned the wheels of the village’s nine mills. The Abóboda mill, which dates back at least as far as the 13th century, is still to be seen, as are the 17th century works to divert the river and the channel that brought the water to the mills. There is a small waterfall on the river called Queda do Vigário (Vicar’s Falls).
