Stretching from Furadouro in the north, to Costa Nova in the south, the lagoon of Ria de Aveiro covers some 25 square miles and is nearly 30 miles long. An enormous storm in 1575 led to a sand bar blocking the harbour and the formation of the lagoon; it was not opened to the sea again until 1808. The water is home to many species of fish, birds, crustaceans and molluscs; it also has countless varieties of seaweed. The harvesting of the latter for fertilizer became a traditional trade, carried out by the brightly coloured boats known as moleceiros.
