The Restoration Monument commemorates the country’s liberation from Spanish rule in 1640, when João IV was acclaimed king. This led to the War of Restoration which ended with the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668. The towering obelisk was erected in the square in 1886 and was designed by António Tomás da Fonseca. The bronze statues on the base symbolize Independence and Victory and are by the sculptors Simões de Almeida and Alberto Nunes. The names and dates inscribed on the obelisk are of the battles in the War of Restoration which is also known as the Acclamation War.
