In 1982 the Regional assembly took over the building commissioned for the Funchal customs authorities by King Manuel I (1495-1521). Although little remains of the original 16th century building completed in 1519, it is still referred to locally as the Antiga Alfândega (Old Customs House). The building had gone through various alterations and improvements, but when it was restored the Gothic style and Manueline decoration were followed and adapted to suit its current purpose. It remains a city landmark. The 18th century chapel has also been refurbished in period style.
