The Regional Archaeological museum, or more correctly, the Museu Arqueológico de Braga D. Diogo de Sousa, was founded in 1918. Dedicated to Archbishop Diogo de Sousa, in recognition of his devoted work for the city from 1512 onwards, the museum moved to its new specially designed modern building in 2007. Appropriately, this is situated in the centre of what was the Roman City of Bracara Augusta. The museum’s collection consists of finds from all over the Braga region and covers the chronological and cultural periods, from the Paleolithic times to Middle Ages. The Roman section is particularly impressive.
