Located about 7 km northeast of Ponte de Lima and just southwest of the Refoios Monastery (see separate entry), is the 12th century Torre de Refoios. This building, in the middle of a peaceful vineyard, is considered by specialists to be the oldest surviving example in Portugal of the isolated medieval fortified torres. Food supplies were kept here in case of foreign aggression. There are fine views from the top of the tower and there are three stone cottages which have been converted from agricultural buildings.
