The Refóios Monastery, located about 7 km northeast of Ponte de Lima, was the mother house of the Crúzios religious order founded in 1120. The present yellow buildings result from extensions and alterations which took place in the 16th to 18th centuries. The monastery became private property following the suppression of religious orders in 1834. In recent times, the main building was restored by the government and houses the Viana do Castelo School of Agriculture. The church annexe is the Refóios parish church and the imposing cloisters, a tiled chapel, Renaissance altarpiece and the huge tiled convent kitchens remain.
