Reclamador Church is situated in the walled village of Castelo Rodrigo and was built in the 13th century by a brotherhood of friars from France, devoted to the sick and needy. Named Rocamadour at the time, it also helped pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, then the largest European centre of pilgrimage. The church was considerably modified in the 17th century and its wooden statue of Santiago Matamouros on horseback, dressed in typical costume, is notable. The scallop shell, a symbol worn by the pilgrims, is a feature of the granite Renaissance pulpit.
