Estremoz has an impressive legacy from its days as a fortified town. The ramparts and gates still stand guard against attack over the surrounding countryside. The fortifications are vast, stretching around most of the town, but visits to Rua Victor Gordon, Rua 31 de Janeiro and Largo de Santiago are particularly recommended. The gates, which were once given their own separate official classifications of Porta de Santo António, Porta de Santa Catarina, Porta de Currais and Porta de Évora are reminders of earlier years when not all visitors were welcomed in the way that today’s tourists are.
