Faro’s defensive walls were erected by the Moors in the 9th century. The two barbican towers, built to protect the entrance to the Arco do Repouso (Arch of Rest), were constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries to reinforce the city’s defences. In 1596 Faro was attacked by the Earl of Essex, who inflicted considerable damage on the city walls. When they were rebuilt they were adapted for the use of cannon. The castle was altered again in the 17th century to incorporate the use of artillery. Recently a long breech was opened to allow access via Rua do Castelo.
