The statue of Ramalho Ortigão was inaugurated in 1954 and is located in the Jardim da Cordoaria (Jardim João Chagas). It is the work of the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida who, together with architect Cottinelli Telmo, conceived the Age of Discoveries Monument in Lisbon. Ramalho Ortigão (1836-1915) was a Romantic Portuguese writer and journalist who, with former pupil and celebrated writer Eça de Queiroz, wrote ‘The Mystery of the Sintra Road’ and launched the satirical journal ‘Al Farpas’. The statue is sculpted in blue limestone and stands on an inscribed granite base.
