Opposite the City Museum at the northern end of the Campo Grande, located in a lovely old villa dating from 1912, the museum is entirely devoted to the life and work of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1846-1905). He is most famous as a caricaturist and the creator of Zé Povinho, a typical Portuguese portrayed as a poor peasant; the most popular Portuguese character. His wide variety of artistic works includes drawings and ceramics. Typically, figures or faces in his work are in the form of vases, cups or teapots, with the nose or a cigar serving as a spout.
