In a small village, just south of Vila Marim and about 5 km west of Vila Real, is the interesting Quintela Tower. Built in the mid 13th century, during the reign of King Afonso III (1248-1279), it was used as a residence and eventually became the property of the Counts of Vimioso. The tower is 10 metres square on plan and about 30 metres high over four floors. The windows, corbelled balconies and corner ramparts were added in the 14th century. It is one of the settings of Camilo Castelo Branco’s 1851 novel, “O Anátema” (The Curse).
