The Quinta Vigia is adjacent to the Santa Caterina Park and, since 1984, has been the official residence of the President of the Regional Government of Madeira. The gardens are open to the public. There are marvellous views over the harbour and the gardens are a delight with many plant and tree species including palms and exotic birds such as the Macaw parrot. The original Quinta, demolished in 1970, was called the Quinta das Angústias and was home to many famous people including the Empress Dona Amélia of Brazil and her daughter.
