The Quinta de Santiago estate, developed in 1896 as a summer residence by Santiago de Carvalho e Sousa, was designed by the Venetian architect Nicola Bigaglia. This interesting building is now also the Art Centre of Matosinhos and was restored and adapted by the celebrated architect Fernando Távora and inaugurated in 1996. The permanent exhibition of paintings and sculpture is largely devoted to the works of António Carneiro (1872-1930), Agostinho Salgado (1905-1967) and Augusto Gomes (1910-1976), all of whom are closely associated with the area. The gardens are a delight and extend to Leixões’ harbour and the Quinta da Conceição.
