The site of the former residence of João Gonçalves Zarco, who discovered Madeira in 1420, the present 19th century house is the home of the Decorative Arts Museum. Furnished in the manner of a wealthy merchant, with Portuguese and foreign furniture and a vast collection of porcelain, pottery, ivory, silver, sculptures and paintings. Some of the most interesting exhibits are items of furniture made from 17th century mahogany packing cases used for shipping sugar. The beautiful surrounding gardens (see separate entry), apart from a noteworthy collection of orchids, contains tombstones other many other architectural items.
