Near the Leixões docks is the park known as the Quinta da Conceição, laid out by one of Portugal’s most celebrated architects, the Porto born Fernando Távora (1923-2005). A great place to exercise, or just to walk, it has tennis courts, a swimming pool, a mini-golf course and a fitness circuit. A small chapel bears witness to a former Franciscan monastery. The monks came here in 1478 to escape the harsh conditions of the Boa Nova monastery which was located on the present site of the lighthouse. The few remains include a Manueline entrance and the St John Fountain.
